HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT

Though hair removal via threading and waxing isn’t invasive, there are a few things you should do to prepare for your appointment. These things help us remove the hair more easily and make your treatment more comfortable overall.

Let Your Hair Grow Out

Your body hair must be between ¼ and ½ inch long. This allows the wax or thread to grab and pull the hair easily. Hair shorter than this is much harder to remove and may give you patchy, uneven results.

Don’t Schedule During Menstruation

Hormone fluctuations right before and during menstruation make your skin more sensitive, which means your hair removal will be more painful. For a more pleasant experience, be sure to schedule your appointment for the week after your menstrual cycle has ended.

Exfoliate Before Your Appointment

Exfoliating prior to hair removal helps remove dead skin cells from around the hair follicles, which loosens them slightly. Exfoliation makes hair removal less painful, and increases the chances of every hair being removed on the first pass.

Wear Loose Clothing

Soft, loose clothing is helpful during and after your hair removal appointment. During the appointment, loose clothing is easier to remove or manipulate so our estheticians can access the treatment area. After your appointment, loose clothing is less likely to rub against and irritate newly sensitive skin.

POST-HAIR REMOVAL CARE

Caring for your skin properly after hair removal helps alleviate any redness and tenderness in the area, prevents blemishes from forming in the follicles, and reduces the chances of developing ingrown hairs.

Below are guidelines for caring for your skin after being threaded or getting waxed.

Avoid Strenuous Activity

Threading and waxing both put some strain on your skin, which is what causes post-hair removal tenderness. Strenuous activities—such as exercising—can stretch and crease your skin or cause sweat to pool in the treated areas. Both things can increase irritation and cause blemishes to form via bacteria trapped in your follicles.

It’s best to just take a cool shower and put on soft clothes.

Skip The Moisturizer

Most moisturizers contain scents and chemicals that can easily irritate freshly waxed or threaded skin. Not only will they sting, but they can also settle into newly open follicles and clog them, which will increase your recovery time.

Instead, opt for alcohol-free, dye-free aloe vera gel. It’s cooling and antimicrobial, so it’ll soothe any swelling and prevent bumps and blemishes.

Pain Management

Most patients experience very mild pain that can be easily soothed with ice or aloe vera gel that’s been chilled in the refrigerator. If these don’t soothe your pain completely, it’s safe to take over-the-counter pain medications—such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen—to make yourself more comfortable

Waxing and Threading FAQs

  • Waxing doesn’t usually result in permanent hair removal. It lasts longer than shaving, since the hair is removed by the root. Most people enjoy smooth skin after waxing for about 3 to 6 weeks.

  • Waxing doesn’t guarantee a change in your hair growth, but regular treatments can damage hair follicles, resulting in permanent hair removal. Some people take years to get to this point, while others see reduced hair growth in as little as 8 months.

  • Waxing can be painful, but most people who get waxed often find it merely unpleasant. Your first handful of waxes will sting—and some areas are more sensitive than others—but our estheticians are experienced in making your treatment as pleasant and painless as possible.

  • Strip wax uses a combination of wax and disposable strips to remove hair—a technique usually used on the arms and legs. The esthetician uses a wooden spatula to spread a thin layer of wax onto the skin, and then presses a disposable strip on top of the wax. To remove the hair, they swiftly pull the strip in the opposite direction of the hair’s growth.

Hot wax doesn’t require strips because the wax is thicker and dries as a hard layer on the skin. Once hardened, the wax is pulled off of the skin, similar to strip wax. This technique is more precise and gentler on the skin, so it’s typically used on the bikini line, face, and underarms.

  • Waxing and threading too often can damage your skin, or even leave scars. It’s best to wait 2 to 3 weeks between waxing and threading sessions for your bikini area, underarms, and face. Arms and legs can be waxed every 3 to 5 weeks.

This waiting period allows the hair to grow long enough for the thread or wax to easily and safely remove it.
